After It's Happened
Staying Organized
Accurate and complete records will help you to resolve your identity theft case more quickly and will keep you on track as you work toward recovery.
Have a plan when you contact a company. Prepare a list of questions that you need to ask and don't assume that the first person you talk with will give you all the information you need. Don't hang up until you completely understand everything you've been told. Don't hesitate to ask to speak to a supervisor if you need more help.
Write down the full name of everyone you talk to, what he or she tells you, and the date the conversation occurred.
Follow up in writing with all contacts you've made on the phone or in person. Use certified mail, return receipt requested, to track what the company or organization received and when.
Keep copies of everything you send.
Only send copies of supporting documents, such as police reports and letters, to and from creditors. Keep the originals in a safe place.
Keep all your paperwork filed in an organized system for easy access.
Save old files even after the case is "closed." Once resolved, most cases stay that way, but problems can crop up.
