Email messages are not as private as you might think. Unlike online banking or shopping sites, which usually use secure, encrypted data transfer protocols, email travels across the Internet unprotected.
Avoid including information such as credit card numbers, your Social Security number, or your driver's license number in any email messages you send.
Never open files, click on links, or download programs emailed to you by strangers. Use file sharing programs with care. Downloading unknown files could expose your system to a computer virus or spyware.
Use spyware and anti-phishing toolbars from reputable companies such as iS3.
