Arm Your Computer

Protect your computer against viruses, spyware and other malicious software that can wreak havoc. Install virus protection software with "live update technologies", such as STOPzilla and Avast.
Install patches for your operating system and other software programs regularly to protect against intrusions and infections.
Use a firewall program, especially if you use a high-speed Internet connection such as cable, DSL or T-1 that leaves your computer connected to the Internet 24 hours a day. The firewall program will enable you to block unauthorized access to your computer. Explore the protection options that your ISP offers as part of its service package, and/or install your own firewall software from a reputable company, such as Symantec.

When you replace your computer system or wireless device, delete all personal files from the old machine before discarding. Use a wipe utility to ensure the files are unrecoverable (see http://oig.nasa.gov/ITR/harddrive.pdf ).
